The Bountiful Police Department is warning residents about a phone scam that has recently been reported by multiple community members.
According to the department, individuals have received calls from someone claiming to be “Lt. Sheldon” or “Lt. Gill” with the police department. The caller tells victims they have unpaid tickets or outstanding warrants and instructs them to remain on the phone while traveling to a gas station kiosk or similar location to make a payment.
Police officials emphasize that these calls are fraudulent.
The Bountiful Police Department emphasized in a social media post that they will never:
- Call residents about unpaid parking tickets or warrants
- Demand payment over the phone
- Instruct individuals to make payments at kiosks, gift card machines, or convenience stores
Residents are urged to be cautious when sharing personal information over the phone. Anyone who receives a suspicious call should hang up immediately and contact their local police department directly using an official phone number to verify the legitimacy of the request.
Bountiful PD is also encouraging community members to spread awareness of the scam to help protect others.
